Vaccinated: Two Classes of Citizens
Our main discussion concerns the vaccine policy in Israel. According to the NY Times: “Under a new “Green Badge” system that functions as both a carrot and a stick, the government is making leisure activities accessible only to people who are fully vaccinated or recovered starting Sunday.”

The concept of whether to grant special privileges (IE tourism and entertainment access) to vaccinated people will impact attractions greatly. This is something to discuss with your team now, as it’s likely to be up to individual attractions to decide in the US.
Meanwhile, the Japan Times reports that “The government has decided to exclude overseas spectators from attending this summer’s Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, officials with knowledge of the matter said Tuesday.”
And related “Thailand eyes plans for vaccine passports and quarantine waivers to reopen travel to potentially millions of tourists.”

Pivots from this week!
Buddhist temples are quite prevalent in Japan and rely on donations and tourism for a significant portion of their operating income. Although they are spiritual centers, they’re also attractions impacted by the pandemic. However, we’re seeing some innovation in temples. The Japan Times Reports that one temple has “developed a meditation app that’s been downloaded more than 15,000 times…” and “it’s organized an online zen meditation community called UnXe, meaning “cloud-sitting.”
Another temple has started “online memorial services last May for families that don’t want gatherings for the deceased” and “is also venturing into areas that staid temples aren’t traditionally known for, such as match-making services, a cafe and yoga classes.”
“Spanish theme park PortAventura World and Spanish football league LaLiga have partnered to create “The Beat Challenge,” a new entertainment experience accessible inside and outside the Tarragona, Spain, theme park. Partnership elements include a digital app, a themed LaLiga restaurant at the resort, a football-themed attraction at PortAventura World and, later, a €100 million LaLiga theme park. Veteran LaLiga executive Juan Vicente Marín Villanueva will lead the partnership efforts.”
