Big Moves
This week had some large moves that will shake all the entertainment industry. First, in a continuation of the DTC trend, Warner Bros will Release their 2021 films on HBO MAX concurrently with theatrical releases. This goes far beyond Disney’s half-hearted attempt with Mulan as HBO max subscribers don’t wait or pay extra.
Qantas commented in an interview with the BBC that sometime in the future (no details were given), they would restrict travel to those with the COVID-19 vaccine.
We’ve seen a 21.5% increase in online shopping over 2019, with 47% via mobile; get those online merch stores up and running!
Bloomberg reports that Cirque is returning under new owners in Summer 2021. The consensus we’re seeing in live entertainment shows a target window of July for large in-person events.
Of course, Universal’s big news of Super Nintendo World opening on February 4th in Japan.
Speaking of Streaming
July is a ways out, and that remains conservative. We still must think of ways to diversify and future proof when we can. To that end both The National Gallery and The Design Museum have opened up paid online tours. Meanwhile, the Monterey Bay Aquarium continues it’s pivot to influencer by releasing YouTube music for work and relaxing tracks featuring footage from their attraction.
Another Disney Minute
ICYMI, here’s some of the larger news from Disney from the past few weeks. First, During the IAAPA Virtual Conference, Disney discussed the ‘Theme Park Metaverse’ Concept. “The metaverse will integrate physical, data and digital elements to enhance guests’ experience, such as augmented reality, mobile apps, artificial intelligence, natural language understanding and computer vision.”
Joe Rohde will retire as creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, effective Jan. 4. Disney World announced the return of Park Hopping beginning in January. The new Castle of Magical Dreams launched at Hong Kong Disneyland.

The Themed Entertainment Association announced the newest Thea Award Recipients and the Thea Masters recipients. IAAPA Named Mats Wedin, Greg Hale, and Tony Baxter to the Hall of Fame.
